Placitas Community Library Children’s Committee Presents
A Journey to the Ice Age
Collin Meeting Room, Placitas Community Library
453 HWY 165, Placitas, NM 87043
May 17, 2026 at 1:00 PM
Please join us for a fun exploration of the Ice Age and the first people to arrive in the Americas. Your children will learn what the environment was like, the animals that were around such as the mammoth, sabertooth cats and giant sloths as well as the technologies people used to hunt and survive. Participants will explore and interact with artifacts from this time period such as a sabertooth cat skull plus an additional activity.
This journey will be led by the Education Coordinator for the New Mexico Department of Archaeological Studies, Ziggy Prothro. Ziggy has a background in archaeology education and was employed by the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory (TARL). She developed a lifelong interest in Paleoindian studies while working at the Gault site in central Texas. Ziggy moved to New Mexico in 2004 to attend graduate school at Eastern New Mexico University. While there, she engaged with research at Blackwater Draw, Locality# 1 and continued public outreach programming. She received her master’s degree at ENMU. She has worked in cultural resource management throughout Texas and New Mexico, and as a public-school teacher in Santa Fe.
Ziggy loves to share her knowledge of archaeology with children. We hope you will join her on May 17 at the Placitas Community Library at 1:00.
This program is the official launch of our summer reading program at the Placitas Library. The theme is Unearth a Story. During the months of June and July we will have 7 additional programs to emphasize reading and learning during the summer months. May 17 is also the day we begin our summer reading challenge. You may register your children for these programs at this event.
We offer new books and other prizes throughout the summer. Reading in the summer is a way your child can maintain and even increase their reading level. Our programs are free and open to all.
